Argumentative Essay
Bullies and the Bullied
Childhood should be filled with happy thoughts and smiles. But sometimes behind those smiles are children who are being bullied. Sometimes behind the most innocent of a child's smile could hide a child who is not so
innocent. School is where children and young adults should learn and experience new things in order to be successful in their future. In reality, bullying is becoming more of an everyday problem, especially lurking behind the closed doors of a school. According to The Anti-Bullying handout, victims of bullying are more likely to suffer from poor health decisions and may feel hurt, stupid, and sad. School have too much to deal with daily and they are the blame of bullying according to most parents. In this case, parents should have a discussion about bullying because it will help children learn how to avoiding bullies, stand up to bullies, and stop being one themselves. This conversation will result in teachers better educating their students without having to break up fights that can take time away from those who are eager to learn and grow into very successful adults.
Parents should sit down and discuss ways on avoiding a bully before a confrontation with the bully. Parents should not confront the head of the school, the bully, nor the bully's parents because things can get worse and
this is what the victim is trying to avoid, according to Childline Counselors. Before any advice is given, parents should talk about a few things. "Parents have a duty to address the problem at home. They must talk about what it must feel like to be bullied and that it is wrong to taunt, tease or hit other students. Just as important is the discussion on how their children relate to their peers," a quote from Susan Duncan, author of "It's Up to Parents to Stop Bullying." Parents should provide examples for when the child sees the bully. A great example to a child would be to walk the opposite direction or to acknowledge the teacher about the bully before class begins. The teacher can have the child moved to another seat more towards the front of the class or near their desk. Once parents begin having this conversation about avoiding the bully, the sooner the child will understand that they have options.
According to Bullying Statistics, there were 14% of high school students who committed suicide due to bullying and 7% attempted. That being said, parents can help guide their children in how to stand up to bullies in case things get worse. According to Peggy Eberts, author of the article, "Helping your Kids Stand Up to Bullies," parents should teach their children to stand up for themselves verbally. They should help their children practice phrases by telling the bullies to stop what they are doing in a firm way. Majority of parents and guardians are role models to children. Parents should provide their children with ways on how to stand up to a bully without the foul language and bad behavior. Sometimes people can get really fed up with bullies and their nonsense resulting in fights. These fights for students can lead to suspensions and decreased grades. If the bullying gets too out of control and doesn't resolve, the parents should take matters into their own hands. Parents can pretend to be the bully while their child can practice standing up to the bully.
It is easier to have a conversation about bullying if your child is being bullied. But what if your child is the bully? It can be hard for the child to confess that they are bullies if they are. They have to trust theirs parents will not lash out on them or punish them, but instead love them and get them out of the situation without the yelling that may come with it. Most bullies don't want to disappoint their parents or have their parents not talk to them. According to Richard Woolfson, journalist of "Parents Should Have a Long Talk With Their Child About Bullying", suggest parents to go back to their teacher and get more facts before punishing or talking to their child. This is important because there are two parts to a story. Before having the discussion, parents should tell them that they will listen and not get upset. Some bullies are born from home. The child could be wanting attention from their parents because they don't get enough. Bullying is what they fall on to get noticed from their parents or from kids at school. Once the child confesses, the parents should then give advice on what they can do to stop themselves from bullying again. Parents should also mention what they will do better as a parent. This talk will create a better bond between the parent and child. If bullying is hard for the child to get over, parents should consider signing them up for counseling. Sometimes children need to hear from an extra voice that isn't familiar. Counseling can help relax the mind of the child making it easier to express their feelings.
Bullying should be addressed by the parents, but there are others who feel otherwise. Those of the opposing side feels it should be addressed by schools since bullying is being taken place there. Schools should
be a safe place, so schools should be more involved to live up to that expectation. "The sad fact is that most bullied children are paralyzed by the problem. Unable to stop it on their own, they may not even speak to an adult about the problem," says Kevin Reed, author of the article, "Schools Must Make it Clear Bullying is Unacceptable." There are others out there who feels strongly that setting up anti-bullying programs can make the situation worse. Schools aren't always the answer when it comes to bullying, because children are reported committing suicide due to bullies and schools not doing a lot of acknowledgement because they have so much to balance. Therefore, parents should be the main source behind stopping bullying once and for all. If the parents are being called about their child not attending school, the parents should talk with their child soon. This will help the school do what it does best and that is teaching.
Bullies are slowly taking over the world, so parents should start taking better control when it comes to their children before it goes too far. Having a discussion about bullying will help their child better cope with
bullying or stop the bullying. This conversation will not only help them learn how to avoid the bully, but to stand up to the bully if matters get too out of hand. These conversations will stop all children from being a bully and it will create a bond that was never reached between parents and their children. Schools will not only in result of this be a better place for children to learn, but it will be a safer place where parents will know that their child is
being well taken care of. Bullies can develop at home and it should end at home. Leave teachings of Math and English to the teachers and get involved in children's lives. Stop bullying before it stops us.

Reflection
This was the final essay we had to conquer. I can say that this essay was the hardest of all essays because it was alot. I wasn't prepared for it to be tricky. Again we had to research using the school's library site, but I already knew how to do my research at that time. I believe the reason for this essay to be hard is because everyone has their own opinion. I chose to do my topic on if bullying need to addressed by only the parents opposed to the school doing so. I was fine at first because I knew what I was doing it on, it was just me overthinking it. I now know to just trust me and get more prepared for the essay. For example, I could gather all of my information and create a venn diagram. The most important thing I've learned was to back up what you believe in. I now know that there is more to persuading anyone than just saying something and not giving facts to support those opinions I have. This essay was hard, but it has shaped me in becoming a better writer.
