Eng-111-97 April, 14, 2015 Definition Essay What is a southerner Usually, it is the southerner who knows what one is. But if you were to ask someone up North, they would most likely say someone who lives in the north, and bring up such states as Texas, Georgia, or Tennessee. Or they just might pretend to talk like one the way they feel southerners talk. They also might think of cowboys and cowgirls and country music. But what is a southerner? According to dictionary.com, a southerner is a native or inhabitant of the south. A native or inhabitant of the south of any specified region, especially the south of England or the southern states of the US, according to the British dictionary. I never lived in south of England, but I am southerner who lived in Augusta Georgia along with my mom and three other sisters. We would be visited by our neighbor or visit them every once in a while. Our neighbors used to say, "You ain't no Southerner if you don't eat some good ole fried chicken and BBQ!" This is also known as "soul food" or "comfort foods." Although, I talk a bit differently, it doesn't mean that they are wrong. A southerner in my opinion, is someone who always stay alert. Majority of females, especially my two sisters, sleep hard. You can touch us or blow a horn, but if we hear something weird, we are up. This also goes for the men. A southerner usually have protection under their beds or dressers or even under pillows. You have to be safe, right? My friend would always have bonfires at her home almost every weekend. Everyone would gather around the fire and sing to Luke Brian on the country radio, which always seems to seems to stay on. Seriously. Lunch would be meatballs smothered in BBQ sauce, fruit, hotdogs, and of course fried chicken. S'mores would always be for dessert and it would put smiles on our faces. Although being around the campfire and singing country songs are ideal in the south, there are other activities. You would see us horse back riding with our matching boots and hats. You'll notice us fishing with our grandchildren. Fathers would go hunting with their sons to create a bigger bond. But there is more to a southerner than the food we eat and the songs we play. We are outspoken, caring, fun, daring, and if we like you, you're one of us. We are outspoken to get our points across, sometimes it may just sting a little, but we are honest. We are caring to those we love. We are fun and daring because we like to live life to the fullest. Once you become trusted, you are in for the long run. A southerner is someone you can let your anger out with or if you need someone to help you do something a bit crazy. But one thing that makes a southerner a true southerner is that we never leave our pack. We may fight and argue, but no bond is greater than the bond we have with family and friends. That is what I call a southerner. |
